Cheap Dinner Ideas: Home & Take Out

With nearly every economy on the planet tanking or drudging along, we all have to find ways to save a little money without experiencing too much sacrifice. Unfortunately, a lot of individuals and families end up having to trim their food budget. Some may not get enough to eat and others do without their favorite snacks and meals. There is some good news in all of this, believe it or not. You can spare your wallet some pain and still eat well. In fact, you can eat healthy and be satisfied without emptying your bank account. I’ll give you some basic tips to keep your belly full for less.

Cheap Dinner Ideas for Home

There are several things you can do to feed yourself and others at home without spending too much. First and foremost, you have to do a little planning depending on how many people are eating. If you are shopping for a small or large family then you could probably benefit from bulk purchasing. Even if you don’t have a large family, many homes nowadays have friends and distant relatives visiting and including themselves in on meals. Sometimes they do so uninvited, but that’s how friends and family can be. The trick with bulk purchasing is to not go crazy with everything you see at a bulk discount store. Sometimes they will have what seems like a fantastic deal, but the pricing per unit is either on par with regular stores or perhaps higher. This is where you need to do a little research and be familiar with food prices. Plan some meals ahead of time and be sure you’ll use everything you buy before it spoils.

Another great tip for planning cheap dinners at home is to introduce your family and friends to new foods. This can seem scary, but it’s well worth it in the long run. My favorite example is for breakfast substituting. Many people typically have cereal, meat items like sausage, and similar bits and pieces. There are two really great morning food choices that cost next to nothing: oatmeal and pancakes. The trick here is making the food yourself. This means buying raw oats and cooking them on the stove. It’s fast and tastes much better than microwave instant varieties. Pancakes are also very easy to make. It’s a simple matter of mixing some batter and pouring it onto a hot pan. The price per meal of these two items is exceptionally low. You won’t spend more than forty cents for a plate or bowl of hot, delicious goodness.

As for lunch and night time eating, you can try replacing your sides with highly filling choices. For example, if you’re eating a pork chop you might also have a nice side dish. What you can do is use something like potatoes or beans for that choice. They are extremely cheap and very filling. You won’t get hungry too soon afterward. So even if you’re buying less food volume, you’ll be perfectly fine and can avoid feeling deprived.

Having a Cheap Dinner from Take Out

For most people, getting prepared meals from a store or shop is an expensive event. You could go to the local burger joint, buy a few meals to feed everyone, and easily blow past twenty bucks. While the food may be excellent, it’s also too pricey for a low budget. However, what many may not realize is that most locally owned restaurants have gems on the menu. They aren’t restricted by guidelines and values enforced from a national corporation. They can put whatever they like on the menu in quantities that may seem absurd. They do this to gain customer loyalty so that people will enjoy their dining establishment more than enormous chains stores. Let me give you a nice example. There’s an awesome home-cooking themed restaurant near where I live. One of the appetizer items on their menu is about six bucks. The key here is how large it is. The plate of food is rather huge. You get a mix of grilled chicken (or ribs) and a few vegetables. You also get a serving of chips and dip (of your choosing). The amount of food is far beyond what I can eat by myself. I have no choice but to share the meal. Even when me and a friend share it, we are stuffed beyond imagination.

If you visit your local shops you can find deals like that. Most of the time it’s a family owned business. More often than not you’ll see partners or siblings running everything. They pick the menu and may even do the cooking. They have the freedom to offer those delicious, specially prepared meals that big stores can’t match.
